By: Elise Cheramie
All of the high school credit classes are important. They help you get ready and prepare you for high school. Some of the high school classes are Business and Finance, Engineering and Tech, Ag, and Spanish. There are a lot more but these are some of the most popular.
Being in a high school credit class comes with a lot of advantages. It can improve your GPA, it’s a good experience for high school, and CTE courses are fun. Some disadvantages of being in these classes are they these classes require work and a lot of effort, all students must bring there “A” game to class each day, and the Major Grades and 60% of your grades.
“One bad day of not working can throw you off completely”, said the Agriculture teacher Mrs. Schneider. Even when you having a bad day, you have to walk in the class room with a new attitude. Not every day will be a good day, but you have to try you best to get everything done.
“I have to study most nights and memorize a lot of vocabulary words”, says Erin Coco when asked about the difficulty of the course. Students have to make time and work really hard to keep up with their grades.
“This Course can effect a student’s GPA, if the student finishes the year with lower than an 80 average,” Spanish teacher Mrs. Castillo said. Sometimes is harder for the younger students to be with the older kids in the classroom and the younger students are really mature enough sometimes to handle somethings.
“I took this high school credit course because I wanted to try something new and learn how to speak a different language”, Coco said. Coco is taking Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 in High School because she enjoys it so much. These courses teach students different things but they will get you ready for the future.
High school credit Courses are a big help for students in Junior High because it helps the students prepare them for High School and even after High School, but if you take the classes in Junior High, students have to do their best and make an effort in that class. A lot of the students are really enjoying the classes, and think it’s a lot of fun.

Ruby's Rise To The Top Ruby’s Rise to the Top
By: Nicole Ikomi and Kayla Sukhu Roll out the red carpet because we have a superstar, and her name is Ruby Saavedra. This past March, Saavedra, a seventh grader at Briscoe JH, appeared on a live performance La Voz, a Spanish singing competition of the show The Voice, singing “Mi Ranchito” by Linda Ronstaet. She received a standing ovation from all three coaches after her performance. For Saavedra, music has always been an important part of her life as her mom used to sing and her dad plays an instrument. Music is in her blood. Armoni Hudson, a seventh grader at Briscoe JH and one of Ruby’s closest friends said she sees her friend as a singing talent that is growing all of the time, but doesn’t see her friendship changing because of that. “I don’t think of her as famous I think of her as my best friend and she does too and that’s what she will always be,” said Hudson. Still, Hudson acknowledged that her friend was a true talent, comparing her voice to Selena Gomez or maybe Shakira. After watching her performance, Hudson was as of a fan as anyone else watching. “I thought it (her performance) was great! Even though I couldn’t understand what she was saying,” Hudson said. “You could hear the passion in her voice and you could tell she wanted to be there.” Saavedra couldn’t deny that performing on the stage was something she was she truly enjoyed. |
“I was excited (about performing on the show). I was happy
because I was representing Houston and my school,” Saavedra said. “I liked to
sing so I wanted to try something new.”
Even though singing on the show was new for Saavedra, she has been performing at parties and to small crowds since she was little. Saavedra explained that her family discovered her talent of singing when she was about 5 years old. She said they were blown away by her voice the first time they heard it, and Saavedra has come to expect this as an almost typical reaction to her voice. “I went to a restaurant with my family and they were having a karaoke competition, so me and my mother decided to sing. We won the competition,” Saavedra said of her first time singing to an audience. Most of Saavedra’s free time is currently spent pursuing that talent, gives her voice a little break from time to time to play soccer. And whether it be through her singing or some other maybe undiscovered talent, Saavedra has high expectations of leaving the world better than she found it. “I would like to make a change in the world,” Saavedra said. With national appearances on singing competitions, she certainly has a head start. |
