Teacher Corner
Taking One Step At A Time
By: Kathrine Guevara and Kenzie Crenshaw
29 teachers of Briscoe Junior High are competing against each other in a competition, where every step counts.
Many teachers that are in the stepping competition are in it to win it. Some of them set a certain goal for each day they’re in the competition so they don’t lose or get a lower rank in the competition. “I’m near the top, and I’m going to keep walking as often as I can. I might start visiting Ms. Lozano every class period,” said 7th grade English teacher, Kaley Jackson. All the teachers in the competition wear a pedometer, which is a small and portable monitor that helps keep track of how many steps they take. Students may see their teacher walk around in circles, or jog in place when teaching in class, so they can keep up in the competition. “I use my lunch time to walk around the school,” said 8th grade Spanish teacher, Maria Castillo. |
There is a chart of the teachers in the competition and how many steps they took in all that is posted up by the front office downstairs.
Some teachers are going against each other, and try to beat one another in the competition. “I want to try to stay ahead of Coach Hines, Bristol, and Smith because they are all right on my tail,” said Briscoe Physical ED teacher, Katie Spangler. When the day ends all the teachers participating write down the distance they walked on the chart that is posted up. Once the chart is filled up to the last day they will add up each teacher’s distances they walked and the one with the longest distance is the stepping competition winner |
Leaf Grants
By: Kayla Suhku & Nicole Ikomi
The teachers are bringing in cash at Briscoe Jr High.
Eleven teachers at Briscoe Jr High have earned Leaf Grants. The total amount of money they had earned was $19,867. The teachers of Briscoe had the largest amount. it was a new record for Briscoe Junior High. The question is, what are they going to do about all that money?
Lamar Educational Awards Foundation, or LEAF, a nonprofit community based organization, is devoted to giving resources to the student body of Lamar.
One Briscoe teacher that earned a Leaf Grant was Coach Ramos. Ramos teaches Physical Education and athletics. Physical Education is a great opportunity to get fit, and have lots of fun. Ramos put all of her money into yoga equipment for her students to be able to try something new and enjoy themselves.
At times PE can be a little challenging for some students.
Coach Ramos says, “Yoga to Fitness can help kids get fit while doing something easy and fun.”
Ramos says that her students are like family to her, so no better way than to spend it on them. The Leaf Grant that Ramos had earned was titled “Yoga to Fitness.” She is very excited for this opportunity of doing yoga with her students.
Other teachers also plan on investing the leaf grants into improving their students experience’s in school.
