Off Season
By: Erin Coco
Throughout the week, 7th and 8th grade girls train to get ready for upcoming sports. This is called offseason.
“The schedule for the week is, on Monday we do the school run. Tuesday, we workout in the weight room. Wednesday, we do sprints or run a mile. Thursday, we do the weight room. Finally, on Friday we have a fun day,” Presley Carlson states.
The athletes have a very strict schedule and always make sure to complete their task. On Monday, the athletes run around all 3 schools which is a mile and a half. On Tuesday, they go through rotations and lift weights. On Wednesday they run around Wertheimer 2 times which is a mile. On Thursday they do the rotations, and weight room again. On Friday they have a fun day where they get to play volleyball or basketball, and get to have fun.
The girls are very careful in the weight room and don’t lift a lot of weight. “I don’t lift a whole lot, because we only have a minute or two to lift,” Alonzo said. Offseason is not always easy, and the girls are always challenged during the workout period. “It’s actually pretty difficult, because they make us run a lot and workouts are kind of hard,” Carlson said. The coaches are very encouraging towards the athletes, but would never pressure them to do anything that might be too challenging.
“I think we are all capable of doing offseason, some just don’t want to,” Alonzo said. During the offseason period the athletes wear clothes that are nice and comfortable to work out in.
“We have to wear our grey Briscoe work out shirts, and our Briscoe athletic shorts,” Carlson stated. The athletes work out for a very reasonable amount of time and get a lot done during this time. “We spend about 40-50 minutes working out,” Alonzo explained. The girls have many mixed emotions about offseason, but still enjoy it. “Certain workouts are really fun, but some aren’t. I really do enjoy having all of my friends there to work out with me,” Carlson exclaimed. Sometimes people slack off a lot, and are not always focused, or determined to work out.
“There are occasions when people walk while we are running, or aren’t trying hard enough when we condition, but most of the girls are really hard core, and want to improve,” Carlson explained.
The offseason athletes are improving so much this year, and will be in great shape for track and tennis season. We are so proud of them, and encourage them every day to try harder and harder. We wish them the best of luck with their athletic skills, and we know they will be great athletes.

The Fight For District Champions
By: Erin Coco
Unfortunately the Briscoe eagles A team lost to their arch rivals Thursday night, Reading Junior High. It was a very difficult loss and hard to accept, but our eagles still did an amazing job, with few errors.
“Our offense in the first game was amazing, but it went down hill from there,” starting A team player, Kirsten Guerrero states.
The eagles think that they should’ve beat Reading and it was just silly little mistakes holding them back from the win.
“I think we should’ve beat Reading. It was just the little mistakes. Serving errors, serve receive errors, and stuff like that,” A team player, Maya Swift states.
The eagles made little mistakes that were not the best for the team.
“I missed one of my serves, and my block timing was wrong,” Swift says.
Serving is one thing that our eagles were not consistent on.
“I missed 3 serves,” Guerrero states.
After the loss the eagles felt angry, sad and were having many mixed emotions about the game they just played.
“I was more angry than sad. I think the way things were played out the second game could’ve gone a lot smoother,” Guerrero explains.
The eagles feel as if they were prepared for the game but it was all just too overwhelming and they made silly little mistakes.
“For the most part we were prepared. We just need more work on our serve receive,” Swift states.
The coaches are amazing and always know how to cheer up our eagles. The eagles are very thankful for our coaches, and couldn’t have made it through the season without them.
“Definitely, the coaches know how to get us excited,” Swift said.
The coaches were a little sad that we didn’t win the game, but still feel like we played a great game and our glad they got to be our coaches.
“I think the coaches feel like we played really hard, and were really proud of us for putting are whole heart on the court,” Swift exclaims.
During the game the eagles had many amazing strategies that they used out on the court.
“The team strategy we use is staying on our toes and getting ready for anything that might come over the net,” Swift said.
The eagles have many more strategies that are a very important part of the game.
“We try our best to give the ball to whoever is on fire. That night, in that case, it was our middles,” Guerrero states.
Even though our eagles A team lost we are still very excited that they got to have such a great season. They finished off 2nd in district, and are leaving Briscoe Junior High on a good note. Our eagle’s futures in volleyball are very bright, and we encourage them to keep on playing. We are so very proud of our Lady Eagles, and wish them the best of luck at Foster High school, and Fulshear High School.

Briscoe vs. El Campo Volleyball Game
By: Elise Cheramie
The last lady eagle 8A volleyball game was a success. Briscoe Eagles won their first and second set. Briscoe Eagles played their best and the hard work payed off.
“My expectations are transitioning quickly and blocking. Although I didn’t block, I did very well with my transitioning”, said Alli Rupert (8A middle blocker). Practicing and working to get better is the best thing for an athlete.
“Winning this game was very important because we have to do our very best if we want to make it to districts and be the district champions”, Rupert said. Sadly the girls lost to Reading Junior High placing second in district.
“The 8th graders play in the big gym, so it is very packed and crowded in there, which is a big distraction while playing because it’s so loud and the crowd is going crazy”, said Erin Coco (8A middle blocker). Staying focus and concentrated helps athletes play better.
When one team’s game is over they stay to support their fellow volleyball players. It really helps the volleyball team because all of the volleyball players start to cheer for them and the crowd. It really gets the volleyball team motivated.
“Preparing for this game was a little challenging but still really helped us, we practice every day for about three hours”,8th grade A-team Kirsten Guerrero said. Sometimes the volleyball teams scrimmage each other, which really helps the all of the volleyball players in a game like situation.
“After the game, we usually go back into the locker room and talk about what we did on the court and how we can improve”, Kirsten Guerrero said. Talking about what they did and how they fix those things for the next game really helps the Briscoe Eagle volleyball players because they will apply those corrections to the next game.
“This season was a blast. I loved playing with all the girls and being able to bound and become a great team. I’d definitely do it all over again if I ever got a chance.” Guerrero said.

Negatives and Positives of School sports
By: Keli Leighty
At Briscoe Junior High there are many major sports that the students can choose to replace PE.Some of the major sports at Briscoe are color guard ,football, and volleyball. These sports represent Briscoe by representing themselves at games and preforming for people.
Some of the positive things about major sports is positive behavior between each other. At Briscoe Junior High the major sports teams are very close helping each other with positive advice to each other.Sports also help you stay active and not be lazy.Cole Tipton says ,''It keeps you in shape."
Another positive thing about major sports is the sensation of winning.Winning helps the students strive to win even more the next time they play. Also when you preform and finish your routine pride and happiness overwhelm the students at Briscoe.
Some of the negative things about school sports are that sense there are so many sports that it is hard to fund all of the sports. In cross country they are having trouble raising money for the team.Mya Tipton says," We did not have an official coach for cross country and we did not really have any money for cross country ."
One of the other problems about major sports that is in one sport more than others is safety equipment. Some sports such as color guard need safety equipment because they are dealing with dangerous things.Madeline Hemenes says," The only negative thing about color guard is the flag falling on your face."
At the very end though kids enjoy playing these sports and that’s the only thing that really matters right?

The Pink Out Game
By: Erin Coco
On Thursday October 1st Briscoe Junior High played a home game against Lamar Junior High. It wasn’t just any game, it was Briscoe’s first pink out game. The whole gym was filled with high spirited fans cheering on our Briscoe eagles.
The Briscoe eagle volleyball players did many fun things for pink out.
“Pink out is awesome! We wear all pink clothing, athletic tape on our cheeks, and our game day shirts,” said 8th grade volleyball player, Maya Swift.
“We’re getting pink out shirts soon, but we wore pink socks during the game,” states 8th grade volleyball player, Keely Castillo.
The game must have been pretty stressful, playing at home.
According to Swift, “We were not very nervous. We knew the team and were used to their level of play.”
Sometimes coaches are very encouraging towards their players.
“The coaches were very encouraging because they would tell us to try our best,” said injured A team, 8th grade, volleyball player, Allison Rupert.
Briscoe eagles have many team strategies during the game.
“We have team strategies like keeping a positive attitude and cheering on for others,” Keely describes.
The team must have been feeling amazing after the game was over.
“Everybody felt proud of what they did, because we all played amazing,” Maya said.
They must have felt so proud of themselves, like they were on top of the world.
“We felt very excited because there was a small amount of errors and we had just won,” Rupert describes.
Many exciting things happened during the pink out game. “Although I didn’t play due to a torn muscle in my thumb I think the most exciting part was seeing the score board at the end of the game,” Rupert explains.
The Briscoe Eagles were super excited to get such a great win.
“The whole game itself was extremely exciting,” Maya exclaims.
The games are sometimes not always organized.
“The game was well organized on our part, but not on Lamar’s part,” Rupert said.
The Briscoe pink out game was very successful according to Allison Rupert, Maya Swift and Keely Castillo. They played well, destroyed Lamar, had fun all dressed in pink, and tried their very best. Briscoe Lady Eagles are continuing to work hard so they can dominate in district.

Dodge Ball Tournament
By: Adiha Campbell and Nicole Ikomi
On March 5th Briscoe Jr. High had its annual dodge ball game were the best of each boys P.E classes team up and play for the championship, which also doubles as a fundraiser.
Coach Herring, one of the boys’ P.E coaches, answered a few questions about the game.
“The way the teams were picked was that they had to qualify during their P.E classes, each class had a tournament and the winner of that tournament would go on into the game, “Coach Herring claims.
“I’m always looking forward to the game, the kids love it and it’s a good fundraiser too, we usually raise about $2000.
“It’s a fun time, it’s a good fundraiser, the kids have a blast, and you get out of class for two periods”, Coach Herring says.

The Briscoe Eagles are moving on to soccer next week, with their tryouts coming up this march. The boys and girls have been practicing with their friends, family or by themselves. Coach Mac, the P.E coach, and soccer coach for Briscoe junior high, is also very excited; I quote, for soccer tryouts that begin on March 31st for the boys and girls. In the soccer team they actually do not play against schools, but against each other, when they are separated into teams. “I believe soccer is a great sport for cardio and, it’s a great sport to be involved in” coach Mac says. Mac says his best players would be Wisdom Udebor, Edwin Romero, and José Vasquez because of their strategy and ability to move quickly. “They are one of the best players of Briscoe Junior High, to me” Mac explains. Edwin Romero, a Briscoe soccer athlete, and Huskie academy player, is participating in soccer again this year. “I’ve always liked soccer since I was 4 to 5 years old” says Romero. |
Romero has
always loved soccer, and plans to be as good as Leonardo Messi in the future;
he is also as well inspired by his uncle who plays soccer in a different
country.
“I would really love to make it big one day in soccer” Romero says. Wisdom Udeobor, one of Macs best player, who also plays soccer out of school, has also signed up again this year to play soccer at Briscoe. “I started playing when I was like 4”explains Udeubor. Udeobor does not play for any outside team but when he gets the chance, he immediately grabs the ball. “I do know that when I’m older I will make sure my life career has to be involved with soccer “states Udeobor. |

Should Physical Education Be Allowed in School
By: Janee Welcome and Maya Swift
It is a known fact that physical activity improves overall health. Not only does it improve circulation, increase blood flow to the brain, and raise endorphin levels, which all help to reduce stress, improve mood and attitude, and calm children, physically active students may also achieve more academically, says University of Michigan.
Many student don’t like PE and don’t think it’s needed in school. Many studies have demonstrated the positive effects of physical education and physical activity on school performance.
Despite the knowledge, the benefits of physical education and physical activity, only 8% of elementary schools, 6.4% of middle schools, and 5.8% of high schools provide daily physical education to all of its students.
The research on physical education and student performance is also not very consistent. There are quite a few studies that show no significant relationship between student academic performances with increased physical activity levels.

Track season started February 9 and will end on March 26. Briscoe’s first track meet was on Thursday February 19 at George Ranch High School.
“The students look excited and nervous. For most of our seventh graders this is their first time being exposed to the sport, which is why they are so nervous,” 7th grade reading teacher and track coach, Laura Loya said.
Waking up early will always be a struggle for teens. “I absolutely hate getting up super early for practice, honestly the one thing that keeps me going is my parents waking me up early. But when I finally wake up, running hurdles is always worth it,” said 7th grader Keely Castillo.
7th grade hurdler Castillo is super excited. Castillo said she, “Enjoys her coaches because, they’re lots of fun and they motivate her to be the best she can be.”
Sean Kelly is a 7th grade pole vaulter, 800, 2400, and 4x400 runner who stays after school for the guys practice every day. “Running is lots of fun and what makes staying after school worth it, is that I get to be with my friends,” Kelly said.
Running is an individual sport; motivating yourself isn’t always the easiest. “My coaches and my friends and family all motivate me to be the best I can be they are very encouraging,” Kelly said.
“I really try to always encourage my athletes to do their best and never give up. We tend to feel discouraged when we can’t do something, and I let my athletes know that hard work and practice goes a long way,” Loya said.

Briscoe Eagles Dribble Their Way to This Season

Briscoe Eagles basketball season has arrived, and the eagles are ready to soar.
The Eagles’ season started on November 20, 2014 and will soon end on February 2, 2015. There will be eight games, three non-district and five district games. Players started off the season with mixed feelings about their teammates, but as the season progressed they eventually got to know one another better. Now that they are closer they act as if they are a family, whether it’s on the court or not. “It would be great for my team to be victorious. Especially (considering) all my team has been through since the beginning of season,” said 7th grade B team player, Tanner Haynes. Not only are our athletes hard workers and dedicated, so are our coaches. They do what they can to put in that extra hour and help their team in any way possible. “Growing up, I grew up watching my older sister play basketball, and that’s how I got interested in the sport. I love to see the athletes’ progress throughout the season and become successful,” said 7th grade girls B team coach, Coach Dina Ramos. |
During practice the coaches try to prepare the players for game time by pushing them to a reasonable extent. The athletes are prepared for how a game affects them. For example, the coaches tell the athletes how fast their opposing team is to help push the team.
“The coaches do push us hard, that’s for sure, but they do it because we need it to win the games. You get very tired during the games and they’re just getting us used to the feeling,” said Haynes. When the athletes are getting ready to play, most feel anxious and excited. You don’t want to let your team, coach, or yourself down. Sometimes that feeling right before you play, boosts up your energy so that even if you’re tired you can play your very best. “At first I get nervous but then when I get in the zone and my fear goes away- I play my best just like in practice,” said 7th grade, A team player, Sharlyne Dimalanta. |
